What is a knowledge catalog, and why a local business should build one

By Lu Haj, Founder of HelpCo AI · Published 2026-09-20

TL;DR: A knowledge catalog is everything your business knows, written down so AI can read and verify it. What Google's product of that name really is, and the small-business version worth building.

"Knowledge catalog" is a real Google term, but not the way most marketing posts use it. In April 2026 Google Cloud renamed its enterprise data catalog to Knowledge Catalog and described its job as grounding AI agents in verified company facts so they stop guessing (Google Cloud, 2026). That product is built for companies with data warehouses. You do not need it, and Google is not telling plumbers to buy it.

The idea behind it is the part worth stealing. Big companies have figured out that an AI is only as good as the facts it can check. The same is true for a three-truck HVAC company. So here is the small-business version.

The simple version

A knowledge catalog is everything your business knows, written down in one place, in a form software can read.

Your services and the areas you serve. What things cost and why. Your licenses and insurance. The questions customers ask every week, with your real answers. Your policies. Your hours. How to book you.

Your website is a brochure for people to skim. A knowledge catalog is closer to the brain of the business on paper, organized so an AI can read it, check it, and act on it.

Why this matters now

In April 2025 Google announced Agent2Agent, or A2A, an open standard that lets one AI agent find and talk to another. Google handed it to the Linux Foundation two months later, and more than 150 organizations now back it, including Microsoft, AWS, and Salesforce (Linux Foundation, 2026).

That is plumbing for enterprise software today, not for your phone line. I am not going to tell you a homeowner's AI will book your crew through A2A next month. But the direction is set. Picture the service call a few years out:

A homeowner tells their assistant, "My AC is not cooling. Find someone good and get me on the schedule this week." The assistant does not browse ten websites. It looks for businesses whose facts it can read and verify: what they do, roughly what it costs, what customers say, when they are open. The business whose facts are clean gets the job.

The early version of this is already here. More than half of Google searches now end without a click, because the answer is written on the results page. I covered the numbers in the zero-click post. The AI writing that answer can only mention businesses it can verify.

What I put in mine

I built one for HelpCo AI this month, so this is a real list, not a theory.

It took a few days. None of it required new software.

Rate yours honestly

Could an AI find each of these about your business today?

  1. Your services, described the way customers describe their problems, and the exact towns you cover.
  2. Pricing guidance. Ranges, what moves the price, what is included. Not your price book.
  3. The questions customers ask, with your answers. "Should I replace the whole roof or just the section that lost shingles?" with a straight answer is exactly what AI quotes.
  4. Licenses, insurance, guarantees, and how a job goes from first call to done.
  5. Proof: reviews and real job stories.
  6. A way to book that software can use, not just a phone number on a contact page.

Most owners I talk to are solid on one and five and blank on the rest.

The part people miss

This is not homework for some future internet. It fixes things this week.

Once the knowledge is in one place, an AI receptionist can answer at 2 AM on a Sunday and get the answer right. Website and social inquiries get fast, correct replies. A new office hire gets up to speed in days because the answers are written down instead of living in one veteran's head. Every customer hears the same correct thing, because it comes from one source.

You fix today's chaos. Being ready for AI agents comes along for free.

Who gets there first

Almost no local service business has done this yet. National brands have engineers on it. The local companies that write their knowledge down in the next year will be easier to find, easier to verify, and easier to recommend than competitors still arguing about a homepage redesign.

HelpCo AI builds a knowledge base for every AI employee it installs, from the business's real services, prices, and customer questions. $0 setup on 12-month plans, and tools start at $99 per month.
